A newly launched bookmaker is tested first on football, because the sport sets the vocabulary of British betting. This section collects that vocabulary.

Match odds, tipsters, futsal and the markets labelled soccer all appear. Fractional prices such as 11/4 or evens are standard, while decimals turn up on exchanges and in many apps.

Betting commercials fall under the whistle-to-whistle code, voluntary and not law: television carries no betting adverts in the window that opens five minutes before a live event and closes five minutes after it ends, before 9pm; racing is excluded. On 13 April 2023 the Premier League clubs agreed to end front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship from 2026/27; sleeves and hoardings stay.
