Horse racing & greyhounds

Racing is where a bookmaker’s rules for the going, non-runners and place terms show most plainly, so a newer site is easily measured here. This section sets out the vocabulary a racing slip depends on.

Each-way means two bets, win and place, so the stake doubles; the market quotes the place terms, which change from race to race and between operators. Starting price, ante-post, Rule 4 deductions and non-runners come next, beside horse and greyhound tips.

Tax puts racing in a class of its own. Remote betting in general moves to a 25% rate of General Betting Duty on 1 April 2027; remote bets on UK horse racing, pool betting and in-person betting are left at 15%.
